What Does a Therapy Session Look Like?

What happens when you come talk to someone at our clinic? I get asked this question often, so I thought I would break it down for you, just in case you are on the fence about coming to therapy. Here's what can expect...

Therapy at our office is an informal conversation where you get comfy, maybe you are drinking a coffee or tea while talking to a caring and interested therapist about how your life is going. We build a relationship with you.

You talk about the good, the bad and the ugly. From what keeps you up at night to what lights your soul on fire. Often this includes your hopes and dreams as well as your past and your regrets. If you are doing a virtual session it's the same process - but you might be in your pjs! Therapists ask questions to help you understand your emotions a little bit better (many people can really only recognize a handful of their emotions). We help you feel understood and assure you that you are not alone - because you definitely aren't! We help normalize what you are going through because we have likely heard it before or even experienced it ourselves (after all we are real people with real problems too).

You might set a few informal goals for how you would like to feel or what you would like to see in your life and then make a plan to make that happen.

This might look like learning some coping skills so you don’t keep losing your shit with the people you love or maybe it’s learning how to change that inner dialogue that tells you that you aren’t good enough or that you are unlovable or unworthy.

It could be just learning how to cope better with the daily stresses of life. Maybe it’s how to improve the communication in your relationships or how to process a traumatic experience that you've had.

Therapy is individual to the person, their issues and what their desired outcomes are. We sometimes give homework that is in line with your goals, if you'd like that. It's important to know that progress doesn’t happen overnight. Going to therapy requires a commitment to yourself, to showing up even when conversations become uncomfortable. You grow when you aren’t in your comfort zone.

Therapy lasts long beyond the session ends…

You don’t have to be “seriously” disturbed to come to therapy. We are medical professionals, but we don’t “fix” people. You aren’t broken and you don’t have to worry about telling us what you think we want to hear either.

This is about you and what you want for your life. It’s about owning anything in your past that is owning you now. It’s never too late to be the best version of you and live the life you’ve imagined for yourself. I encourage you to give therapy a try!
