Do you ever feel you are on an uphill climb, searching for the happiness, peace and joy that’s been promised to you by chasing some of all the things; attractiveness, financial security, children, power, love, security, career goals, relevance etc?
Perhaps you feel you are trying to “arrive”, but never seem to be able to.
There is often a “just one more thing” mentality that follows for years.
Life can become an endless hamster wheel of accumulating more roles and responsibilities that are promising you the things you have been conditioned to want for yourself but don’t end up making you feel how you expect to feel when you get them.
I am realizing as I get closer to the midpoint of my life that the first half of my life was not lived very intentionally and the second part is now about learning about myself, my beliefs and values, and unlearning things that aren't true for me anymore.
I recently heard this quote:
“If you don’t like what you’ve built, you don’t stop to assess it”.
This is powerful as many of us live like this; we keep putting one foot in front of the other, too afraid to slow down to face the painful parts of ourselves and our life that we have chosen for ourselves. It is very scary to do this as it means we must accept the person we truly are and acknowledge the decisions we have made that no longer serve us and who we want to be for the second part of our life.
To become more intentional about your life, you must slow down to take notice.
Strip away what's numbing for you, to hear what that quiet and scared inner voice is saying. It is too easy to become disconnected from ourselves and what we want.
We often stop trusting ourselves and our judgement, we become critical of ourselves and others and can soon find it hard to connect with friends and family.
Here are a few ways to check in and begin this conversation with yourself:
Spend a little time alone without distraction.
Ask yourself some questions:
How do I feel in this moment? (There are many great feelings wheels you can google to help)
Do I feel lonely?
Do I feel fulfilled?
Whats best for me right now?
What is my gut telling me that I may be afraid to acknowledge?
What is a small step I could take to re align myself with what I want for my life.
Self-discovery and living in line with who you are is a lifelong process. You can ask for help along the way, a trusted friend or therapist can reflect back to you what's right in front of you that you may not be able to see.
You are never alone.
