Counselling for Disordered Eating & Body Image in New Brunswick
Struggling with food or how you feel in your body can be overwhelming, isolating and deeply exhausting. You may find yourself constantly thinking about what you ate, what you “should” eat or how your body looks—and still never feel good enough.
Whether you’re dealing with binge eating, restriction, emotional eating, body dysmorphia or simply a painful relationship with food and your body, you are not alone. At Laura Gatien & Associates, we offer a compassionate, shame-free space to explore what’s going on beneath the surface and begin building a healthier, kinder relationship with yourself.
how We can help
You don’t need a formal diagnosis to seek help—any level of struggle with food or body image deserves care. We can help you:
Understand your relationship with food: We help you explore the thoughts, emotions and patterns that shape how you eat—without judgment or shame. Together, we’ll work to identify emotional triggers for eating, break cycles of restriction, bingeing or food guilt, and rebuild trust and connection with your body’s cues (hunger, fullness, satisfaction).
Feel confident with your body image and self-worth: Body image concerns often go far beyond appearance—they can touch on identity, worthiness, confidence and belonging. We can help you reduce negative self-talk and body checking, develop a more compassionate and realistic view of your body, and learn the tools to build confidence and self-esteem outside of appearance
Navigate stress, anxiety, and perfectionism: Disordered eating often begins as a way to cope with stress, trauma or the pressure to be “good enough.” We help you understand these deeper layers and identify healthier coping strategies for stress and overwhelm. We’ll work through anxiety, shame or guilt related to food and body image, and explore perfectionism, control and emotional triggers.
Build practical, sustainable habits: We focus on progress—not perfection—and offer realistic tools to help you move forward. We can help you to create balanced routines around meals and movement, develop grounding techniques for difficult moments and gain skills to manage social situations, comments about your body or diet culture pressures.
who we help
Teens and adults struggling with food or body image: Whether you’ve struggled for years or are just beginning to notice unhealthy patterns, we support you in understanding your relationship with food and rebuilding self-trust.
People who don’t “fit the stereotype” of an eating disorder: Disordered eating does not always look the way people expect. You may appear “fine” on the outside while struggling internally. Your experience is real—and you deserve support.
Parents worried about their teen: If your child is showing signs of disordered eating, body preoccupation or emotional distress, we help you understand the behaviours, respond with compassion, and support your teen effectively.
People recovering from diet culture: Chronic dieting, weight cycling and constant body monitoring can take a toll. We help you unlearn harmful messages and build a more peaceful relationship with food and movement.
How It Works
The first step in connecting with a New Brunswick counsellor for disordered eating is to either fill out our intake form or book directly with one of our counsellors online. If you’re not sure who to book in with, you can take our therapist matching quiz — a quick and easy way to connect with an available therapist who’s the right fit for your journey. Alternatively, you can call our booking coordinator at 506-651-1239 Ext. 1 to get matched right over the phone. Our booking coordinator takes great care in thoughtfully matching you with a therapist who fits your needs, preferences and availability.
Sessions are flexible, available both in-person and virtually across New Brunswick and designed to meet you where you are.
How often you attend sessions is discussed collaboratively and is based on your needs and schedule.
You are always in control of your therapy, working at your own pace, and can choose the frequency and length to best suit your needs.
Sessions with a registered social worker (RSW) or licensed counselling therapist (LCT) are $160 for 50 minutes.
For specialty therapy, including Family, Couples, TRIP, EMDR, ART or Play Therapy, sessions are $160 for 50 minutes.
How much does therapy cost?
Is therapy covered by insurance?
Our counselling fees are not covered by Medicare but are covered by many extended health insurance plans.
Our clinic has therapists who are either registered social workers (RSW) or Licensed Counselling Therapists (LCT).
You must check your specific plan for what you have coverage for, as coverage is different for each policy. Verify that your plan covers counselling/therapy with a MSW, RSW or LCT. Your insurance may state you have coverage for clinical counsellor or psychotherapist, which would cover LCT or social worker.
We also offer direct billing with many different insurance companies, which allows you to keep more money in your pocket. We can direct bill Blue Cross, Veterans Affairs (VAC), Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), Canada Life, Claim Secure, Chamber of Commerce, Work Safe, NIHB, Department of Social Development, and more provided your plan is set up for direct billing. You are still responsible for any co-pay amounts at the time of service.
