Neurodiversity, ADHD & Autism Counselling in New Brunswick

Neurodiversity recognizes that brains work in different ways and that these differences are not something to “fix.” Neurodivergent individuals may experience the world differently in areas such as communication, attention, emotional regulation, sensory processing, learning and social interaction.

While neurodiversity can come with unique strengths, it can also create challenges in environments that are not designed with those needs in mind. Many neurodivergent individuals spend years feeling misunderstood, overwhelmed or pressured to mask who they are in order to fit in.

Therapy can provide a supportive, neuro-affirming space to better understand yourself, build coping tools, and navigate daily life in a way that feels more sustainable and authentic.

Our Approach

At Laura Gatien & Associates, we believe that a diagnosis can sometimes be a helpful tool for understanding experiences, guiding treatment, accessing supports or helping individuals feel less alone in what they are navigating. However, we also believe that people are far more than a label or diagnosis.

Our approach is rooted in the understanding that mental health exists within the context of a person’s life experiences, relationships, environment, nervous system, culture and stressors. At the heart of our work is the belief that needing support is part of being human, not something that should require shame, justification or pathology.

What we help with…

We support children, teens, adults and families navigating a range of neurodiversity concerns, including:

autism

Support for autistic individuals navigating emotional regulation, sensory overwhelm, social relationships, identity, burnout, masking and life transitions in a neuro-affirming environment.

Challenges with attention, impulsivity, emotional regulation, organization, motivation and overwhelm. We support individuals in understanding how ADHD impacts daily life while building strategies that work with, not against, their brain.

Executive Functioning Challenges

Difficulties with planning, organization, task initiation, time management, routines, focus and follow-through that may impact school, work, relationships and daily functioning.

Learning & School-Related Challenges

Support for children, teens and families navigating academic stress, learning differences, school avoidance, bullying, self-esteem concerns and emotional impacts related to school experiences.

Emotional & Behavioural Regulation

Support for individuals struggling with emotional outbursts, frustration tolerance, impulsive behaviours, anxiety, emotional overwhelm or difficulty coping with transitions and stressors.

Caregiver & Family Support

Guidance and emotional support for parents, caregivers and families navigating advocacy, burnout, family stress, emotional exhaustion, parenting challenges and relational dynamics connected to neurodiversity or developmental concerns.

Special Needs & Intellectual Challenges

Support for individuals with developmental, cognitive or intellectual disabilities, along with guidance for caregivers and families navigating emotional, behavioural and relational concerns.

Sensory Processing & Overstimulation

Support for individuals experiencing sensory sensitivities, overstimulation, shutdowns, overwhelm or difficulty navigating environments that feel emotionally or physically intense.

Support for individuals exploring identity, self-acceptance, confidence and the emotional impact of masking, feeling misunderstood or struggling to fit expectations placed on them by others.

Social, Communication & Relationship Challenges

Support with friendships, boundaries, communication, social anxiety, relationship dynamics and building a stronger sense of belonging and connection.

How Therapy Can Help

Neurodivergent individuals often benefit from therapy that is flexible, validating and tailored to their specific strengths and challenges.

In therapy, we may work together to:

  • Develop emotional regulation and coping strategies

  • Build executive functioning and organizational skills

  • Reduce shame and increase self-understanding

  • Support sensory regulation and overwhelm

  • Improve communication and relationship skills

  • Navigate school, work, parenting, or life transitions

  • Strengthen confidence, identity, and self-advocacy

Our therapists use neuro-affirming, trauma-informed and evidence-based approaches tailored to each individual’s needs and goals.

How It Works

The first step in getting support is to fill out this form. Based on your requirements, we’ll match you with someone we feel is best suited to help you. Alternatively, you can take our quiz and get matched with an appropriate therapist for your needs.

Our therapists use trauma-informed and evidence-based approaches such as EMDR, somatic strategies, attachment-focused therapy and cognitive therapies — always tailored to your unique needs and readiness.

Counselling sessions can be conducted in-person or virtually, whichever you prefer. Sessions typically run 50 minutes long. How often you attend sessions is discussed collaboratively and is based on your needs and schedule. You are always in control of your therapy, working at your own pace, and can choose the frequency and length to best suit your needs.
