Therapy for Complex Mental Health Issues in New Brunswick
Living with a complex mental health condition can affect every aspect of life, including emotions, relationships, identity, work and daily functioning. Many people navigating these experiences carry significant shame, isolation or fear of being misunderstood.
At Laura Gatien & Associates, we believe that a diagnosis can sometimes be a helpful tool for understanding experiences, guiding treatment, accessing supports or helping individuals feel less alone in what they are navigating. However, we also believe that people are far more than a label or diagnosis.
Our approach is rooted in the understanding that mental health exists within the context of a person’s life experiences, relationships, environment, nervous system, culture and stressors. At the heart of our work is the belief that needing support is part of being human, not something that should require shame, justification or pathology.

How Therapy Can Help
Complex mental health concerns often require thoughtful, individualized support. Therapy can help reduce distress, improve coping and strengthen emotional stability and relationships.
In therapy, we may work together to:
Develop emotional regulation and coping strategies
Reduce shame and strengthen self-understanding
Address anxiety, depression, and emotional overwhelm
Improve communication and relationship patterns
Build routines and supportive structures
Process trauma and difficult life experiences
Strengthen family and caregiver support systems
Our therapists use evidence-based, trauma-informed, and collaborative approaches tailored to each person’s needs, goals and readiness.
Who We Work With
We support:
Teens and adults navigating complex mental health conditions
Individuals seeking long-term emotional support and coping tools
Families and caregivers looking for education, guidance and support
People who have felt misunderstood or stigmatized in past mental health experiences
We believe people are more than a diagnosis. Therapy should be a space where you feel respected, supported and understood as a whole person.
How It Works
The first step in getting support is to fill out this form. Based on your requirements, we’ll match you with someone we feel is best suited to help you. Alternatively, you can take our quiz and get matched with an appropriate therapist for your needs.
Our therapists use trauma-informed and evidence-based approaches such as EMDR, somatic strategies, attachment-focused therapy and cognitive therapies — always tailored to your unique needs and readiness.
Counselling sessions can be conducted in-person or virtually, whichever you prefer. Sessions typically run 50 minutes long. How often you attend sessions is discussed collaboratively and is based on your needs and schedule. You are always in control of your therapy, working at your own pace, and can choose the frequency and length to best suit your needs.
